Westermo product life cycle policy

Westermo products are designed for long product life and continuous evolution, which gives our customers the possibility to develop the network and protect their investment over an extended period of time.

Products naturally have a life cycle where each product eventually reaches end-of-life and is therefore discontinued. However, each products’ life cycle and its discontinuation will be influenced by a number of factors. Products may be discontinued because of new and improved products, obsolete technology, changing industry standards, lack of component supply, low market demand, etc.

The Westermo Product Life Cycle Policy helps our customers foresee the product life cycle which helps them to plan and circumvent problems in their current and future network installations.

Westermo divides the product life cycle into the following phases: Active, Mature, Limited and Discontinued. Each product passes through these phases during its product life cycle.

Linked to the product life cycle phases, there are three product notifications that describe the respective change of life cycle phase. See picture above.

  • Transition to Mature
  • Last-time-buy
  • End-of-life

The product notifications will be available on the product support page of the respective product.

Active phase

A product enters the Active phase when start of sales is announced.

During the Active phase, the product is active and promoted, sold, manufactured, maintained and supported in all aspects. As an Active product, the product is improved and maintained as needed from a hardware, software and documentation perspective. Hardware updates and revisions may be issued, e.g. because of active component obsolescence management. New software versions; including new functionality, cyber security updates and bug corrections will be made available for the product. Westermo will also maintain certificates and approvals to relevant standards.

During the Active phase, Westermo offers a full range of services and product support. Standard warranty terms are acknowledged from dispatch date. Additional services such as Repair Services and Technical Support are available.

Transfer to Mature phase takes immediate effect at announcement.

Mature phase

A product enters the Mature phase through a life cycle notification.

During the Mature phase, the product is active and promoted, sold, manufactured, maintained and supported. A product in phase Mature may have a longer delivery time compared to a product in phase Active. As a Mature product, the product will be maintained for critical updates from a hardware, software and documentation perspective. Hardware revisions may be issued, e.g. because of active component obsolescence management. 

New software versions normally support products in Mature phase. Some products may be subject to technical limitations meaning that new software versions may include critical cybersecurity updates and high priority bug fixes only.

Westermo will maintain certificates and approvals to relevant standards.

A product typically enters the Mature phase when a successor is available, uses legacy technology, or when there are changing industry standards. Other reasons for moving a product from Active to Mature may be lack of component supply, low market demand, or similar reasons.

A product is typically supported for 10 years (Mature phase + Limited phase) from the day it is classified as a Mature product. The respective length of Mature and Limited phases will be individual for each product. Normally, for form-fit-function product replacements, the Mature phase is around 12 months. For products with legacy technology the Mature phase may be several years. In special cases, the length of the Mature phase may be very short and the notices Transition to mature and Last-time-buy are combined into a common notice.

During the Mature phase, Westermo offers a full range of services and product support. Standard warranty terms is acknowledged from dispatch date. If a form-fit-function replacement exists, the warranty may be managed using the replacement product. Additional services such as Repair Services and Technical Support are available.

Transfer to phase Limited is typically announced with minimum six months’ notice. Unforeseen events may shorten the time of notice. 

Limited phase

A product enters the Limited phase though a life cycle notification, including a last-time-buy date and last-shipping-date.

During the Limited phase, the product is inactive and generally not available. The product may be available on a case-by-case basis as a spare part. Spare part availability cannot be guaranteed and must be requested to Westermo Customer Service Center. Potential sales of spare parts are typically subject to longer lead times and minimum order quantities. Special terms and conditions apply. Products in Limited phase are normally not maintained or supported by new software versions and certificates and approvals are normally not updated.

A product in Limited phase is supported to the best of Westermo's efforts, but not all services and support can be guaranteed. Technical support will normally be offered and the objective is to uphold the necessary knowledge and skills to the best of our ability. Availability of Repair Services will be depending on availability of components and skills.

Transfer to Discontinued phase is typically announced with minimum six months’ notice. Unforeseen events may shorten the time of notice.

Discontinued phase

A product enters the phase Discontinued though a life cycle notification, including an end-of-life date.

When the product has entered the Discontinued phase, it is no longer available or maintained.

Support and services cannot be guaranteed. Limited support such as technical support, service and repair may be offered on a case by case basis

Product information and documentation is available in the Product Support section on the website. The product will be marked as Discontinued.

Software in relation to Product Life Cycle

Westermo software products are continuously developed with new features, strengthened cyber security and robustness. To be up-to-date with cyber security demands and the latest standards Westermo’s customers are encouraged to always use the latest software versions.

To support the customers in their assets’ life cycle, Westermo has full support for latest and previous software versions within a time window. The time windows for different categories of software are typically 2 years for WeOS and 1 year for WeConfig.

During the time with full support for software versions, Westermo reproduces and investigates reported problems. Security vulnerabilities are analyzed and consequences as well as mitigation described.

OEM Products

Products that Westermo offer as OEM products are supported according to individual maintenance agreements and/or contracts.
